As you start winding down the 2022 calendar year, keep in mind the following year-end dates and deadlines:

The reporting window for districts is open Nov. 1-30. Individuals who have been identified in the Ohio Educational Directory System (OEDS) as a superintendent or the superintendent’s designee have access to complete the report.

  • December 31 – Under Ohio law, an agreement for services from an educational service center (ESC) may be terminated by a school board by notifying the ESC governing board of its intent to terminate the agreement by the first day of January of any odd-numbered year. Such termination will be effective on June 30. The failure of a district board to notify an ESC of its intent to terminate by January 1 will result in the renewal of the existing agreement for the following two school years.

  • December 31 – The treasurer of each school board must canvass the members of the board no later than December 31 to establish the day of the organizational meeting. RC 3313.14 requires city, local and exempted village boards to organize within the first 15 days of January. Joint vocational school district (JVS) boards and ESC governing boards have until the end of the month to hold their organizational meetings. At the board’s final meeting in December, it is also helpful for the board to name a board member to preside as a president pro tem at the organizational meeting in January. This eliminates the awkward situation of having no one to call the January meeting to order and preside over officer elections. Check out OSBA’s fact sheet on organizational meetings for more information.

As a reminder, OSBA’s division of legal services maintains a list of other important Dates and Deadlines that might be helpful as you start the new year. Please reach out to the division with any questions. We hope you have a wonderful upcoming holiday weekend!
