First Amendment and School Employees after Kennedy

The intersection between the Establishment Clause and school employees’ free speech and free exercise rights was considered earlier this year by the U.S. Supreme Court in Kennedy v. Bremerton School District. This session will review the court's decision, discuss how it could apply in other situations, and look at how state and federal laws could affect these rights in the future.

Harassment and discrimination in the workplace

Several state and federal laws, such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act and others, impose requirements on employers--including school boards--to provide workplaces free of harassment and discrimination. Training, preparation and knowledge about how to respond effectively to harassment and discrimination complaints in the workplace are key to meeting these requirements. This session will discuss required policies, best practices for employee training, district responses to allegations, and handling investigations.
