Late in 2021, the Ohio General Assembly included a provision in S.B. 1 to allow school districts to hire an individual as a substitute teacher, for the 2021-22 school year only, if the individual met the requirements established by the district, was deemed of good moral character and successfully completed a background check.
In just a few weeks, schools across the state will open their doors and officially kick off the 2022-23 school year. As they prepare for the arrival of their students, we see a significant uptick in the calls we receive about Ohio’s attendance, tuition and custody laws.
Earlier this month, Gov. Mike DeWine signed House Bill (HB) 583 which made changes to the dyslexia support law. The changes take effect on Sept. 22.
In February, the Ohio General Assembly passed House Bill (HB) 51, which allowed public bodies, including boards of education, to meet remotely, but only until June 30, 2022.
Earlier this week, the U.S. Supreme Court issued an opinion in the case Kennedy v. Bremerton School District. The case involved a high school football coach who lost his job after he knelt at midfield after games to pray. The coach sued the district for the disciplinary actions it took against him, alleging that the district’s actions violated his rights under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
In conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Title IX, the U.S. Department of Education has released proposed amendments to the regulations for Title IX for public comment.
Earlier this week, Auditor of State Keith Faber’s office announced that an Ohio grand jury had indicted a former school superintendent for numerous violations of law. Among the violations were 13 counts of having an unlawful interest in a public contract for securing contracts for a family member.
If you listen carefully, you might be able to hear Alice Cooper singing in the distance. School may be out for the summer, but that doesn’t mean all is quiet in the schoolhouse. We know that many districts use the summer months to complete building repairs and improvements and dispose of old or unused property.
