The Consortium of State School Boards Associations (COSSBA) is very excited to announce that its Urban Boards Program is hosting a free, four-part webinar series over the next year. The series, “ Challenging Environments in Today’s Public Education System,” will focus on poverty, food insecurity, learning loss and recovery, and socio-emotional and mental health challenges facing students in America’s public schools. These four challenges were determined from an extensive list identified by the program’s advisers, school board members from urban, suburban and rural school districts. This webinar series is geared to board members and staff from any type of school district, rural, suburban or urban.

Join COSSBA for the first episode, Poverty and Public Education, on Thursday, March 8, at noon EST. Register for this free webinar at https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Lnrvy7HdQQy02cgHdVaozA

Details of this episode:

The first episode will highlight the impact poverty has on students and their ability to succeed in the classroom. Research has proven the challenges faced by students who live in poverty exceeds those of their peers. The demographics tell us that poverty is an issue of equity that must be addressed. Students living in poverty often have fewer resources at home to complete homework, study or engage in activities that help equip them for success. Join us as board members from Mississippi and Missouri discuss poverty’s impact in their districts and states. We’ll also hear from a Georgia superintendent who has worked with partners within the community to create a poverty-informed community.

Register for this webinar as, together, we focus on creating solutions to enhance the work of schools across this nation in tackling poverty.
