Does your board have new members? Have you been a board member for a while, but want to brush up on some of the basics? OSBA’s upcoming workshop — “Board member 101: Survival kit for your first 90 days in office” — may be just the ticket.

This two-day workshop focuses on helping board members, particularly those who are new to their positions, to develop into more effective educational leaders. OSBA staff from the divisions of board and management services, legal services, policy, and legislative services are collaborating to offer a hands-on, high-quality educational event packed with frequently asked questions, tips and best practices to make you a better board member. The interactive format will offer plenty of time for you to ask questions.

Board member 101 is offered regionally, with sessions in Perrysburg and Miamisburg on Jan. 20, and in Columbus and Independence on Jan. 27. The $255 registration includes four books: “Board-Legislature Partnership,” “Board-Superintendent Partnership,” “Board-Treasurer Partnership” and “Boardmanship.”

The workshop begins on Saturday, with the morning focused on boardmanship and the afternoon devoted to critical legal issues and legal resources. The day closes with a reception, which is a great opportunity for you to network with other board members. On Sunday, the workshop will delve into legislation, OSBA resources, board policy and goal setting.  Breakfast and lunch are included on both Saturday and Sunday.

If anyone in your district would benefit from this workshop, please pass this information along to them. Registration is available on OSBA’s website at this link or by contacting Laurie Miller—lmiller@ohioschoolboards.org.
