The Ohio School Boards Association is your guide as you begin your first year of board service. OSBA provides comprehensive training, support, resources and inspiration to school boards to maximize their effectiveness in carrying out their leadership roles.

To help you start off on the right path, OSBA created the New Board Member Passport

This tour of workshops exposes you to topics that are important to new board members in their first year. We’ve also included stops at events in your region of the state to help you network with and learn from colleagues in other school districts. Review the six stops on the OSBA New Board Member Passport. Click on the links for more information and to register or contact Shannon Camerucci at

Stop 1: Board Member 101: Survival kit for your first 90 days in office
This training will help you start off on the right foot. These two-day workshops are offered over two weekends in four locations:

• Jan. 11-12 at the Cleveland Marriott East, Warrensville Heights, or Hilton Garden Inn Dayton South, Miamisburg

• Jan. 25-26 at the Hilton Garden Inn, Perrysburg, or Marriott Columbus Northwest, Dublin

Stop 2: School Finance 101: What school board members should know
School finance is a complicated subject. As board members, it is important to know the basics. Learn from the experts about state and local funding, levies and five-year forecasts. Become your district’s expert and find out how to access data and what questions to ask. This workshop is Feb. 28 at the OSBA office in Columbus.

Stop 3: Regional conferences
To enhance and customize member services, OSBA is divided into five regions: Central, Northeast, Northwest, Southeast and Southwest. The regions host spring and fall conferences, where attendees gather for dinner, fellowship, learning, networking and recognition, and to share in the successes of Ohio public education. Visit to learn more about your region and find the dates and locations of these events.

Stop 4: State Legislative Conference
This conference provides school board members, administrators and treasurers a great opportunity to meet state legislators and discuss issues impacting public education. You’ll hear briefings on proposed legislation and legislative leaders will share their views on public education and other priorities. As a board member, this is your opportunity to reinforce the importance of a strong public school system. This conference is March 18 at Sheraton Columbus Capital Square.

Stop 5: Board Leadership Institute
Boost your leadership skills at the OSBA Board Leadership Institute. This two-day conference is created for board members by board members and is a must-attend workshop for any new board member. This unique institute is designed to further your professional development by focusing on timely topics and allowing opportunities for you to speak with the experts. This event is May 1-2 at the Hilton Columbus/Polaris.
