The Ohio Ethics Law requires certain elected officials and public employees to annually file a financial disclosure statement with the Ohio Ethics Commission (OEC). A financial disclosure statement requires a filer to disclose information regarding their personal financial interests and fiduciary relationships for the preceding calendar year.

Historically, the deadline for filers was April 15. However, in June 2015, HB 64 made changes to Revised Code section 102.02, including revisions to the filing deadline. As a result, the statutory deadline is now May 15. This year, May 15 falls on a Sunday, which means that the general filing deadline for 2016 is Monday, May 16.

Under the law, all school district superintendents, treasurers and business managers must file a financial disclosure statement with the Ohio Ethics Commission. These officials must file regardless of the size of their district. School board members are required to file a financial disclosure statement only if they serve in a district that has a total student count of 12,000 or more (as most recently determined by the Ohio Department of Education). A list of those districts appears on OEC’s website.
